This report confirms the grim truth we already knew. The Home Office failed to protect Windrush citizens' "rights to live, work and access services" and "discharged its duty of care." It is a national disgrace.

The Home Office ignored warnings and recommendations for years. Rather than admitting its wrongs, it subjected British citizens to the brutal Hostile Environment. We still don't know how deep this goes. So far just 18 have had apologies.
Even after the scandal broke, the Home Office has shown a "surprising lack of urgency to identify other groups that may have been affected." The department is more interested in covering its own back than uncovering the truth.

If true, this is an unprecedented and historic humiliation for Theresa May. After two years of negotiations with the EU, she is not even prepared to let MPs vote on her deal.
The truth is that it's unlikely any form of Brexit could command a majority in this House. It is impossible to deliver on the 2016 referendum result because it was based on lies, false promises, and fantasy. No more negotiations in Brussels will change this fact.
Our politics is now well and truly stuck. The way to unblock it is to go back to the public with a People's Vote, which will either offer a mandate for a specific form of Brexit, or to remain in the EU.

Very frustrating interviews on @BBCR4Today this morning on Amber Rudd and #windrush. Shows how hard it is to make accountability work in the UK system - @instituteforgov on this instituteforgovernment.org.uk/publications/a…
Rudd linked the treatment of #windrush to the culture of the Home Office – failing to look at people. (That’s the reason why she is now the victim of leaks – not right but not surprising).
So the question is why do officials do that. One reason is that they feel pressure to meet targets for performance Ministers have set. And as Diane Abbott said it matters what the target is. (lots of work on how targets drive behaviour..)

Well... #Windrush was happening before #Brexit, that IS true. However, it is part of the same xenophobic rhetoric that our heartless Tory government has been pursuing...
So they are absolutely linked, on a macro level as to the type of policies shaping our country today. The hostile environment is thriving because of the enablers of #Windrush and #Brexit

Lots of very welcome attention on what Theresa May herself entitled the “hostile environment”. One of main planks is “right to rent”, where landlords have to check immigration papers of tenants. Does this cause discrimination against black and ethnic minority tenants? Thread 1/?
Right to rent was brought in by Immigration Act 2014 and piloted in West Midlands before national roll out. Home Office itself commissioned research in 2015 into whether it might cause discrimination, available here gov.uk/government/pub…
