Feminist scholar @drstellanyanzi will appear again in court on Monday on charges of “offending” #Ugandan dictator Yoweri Museveni and his late mother. Fuck civility. Fuck politeness. Tyranny and authoritarianism are not civil nor polite.
Nyanzi faces a 1 year prison sentence if convicted for posting a poem on Facebook wishing Museveni’s mother’s birth canal had poisoned him upon birth to save #Uganda from him. The poem ends with “You Should Have Died At Birth, Oh Dirty Delinquent Dictator.” #FreeStellaNyanzi

Most black folks I know have posted about the docuseries in the last few days (thankfully black people in my networks are expressing support of the victims of sexual abuse & coercion though their posts suggest to me that is not the case with their entire friends network)
In contrast, nearly all white folks I know are not even acknowledging the docuseries, the #RKelly conversation, nothing. This divide/contrast reminds me that white people are not required to know what’s happening to and among black folks.

“Civility” in discourse begins with a commitment to civics.

You can certainly be polite while calling for the disenfranchisement of others, or engaging in bad faith arguments, or repeating falsehoods, but you aren’t being civil.

That’s not what “civility” means.
“Oh, but Reg,” argues Nikolai B., “The dictionary most certainly says that civility means politeness.”

Ah, it looks that way on the outside. But why? Why does a civil conversation look like a polite conversation?
A:

Because if people are debating something in good faith, with mutual respect, and with everybody’s mutual welfare at heart, they are naturally calm and polite with each other.

They carry a natural mutual respect.

So civility implies politeness. But not the other way around!

Civility is putting your hands up and getting shot.
Civility is being nice to people who created internment camps for children.
Civility is useless in the face of hate and fascism.
Civility, in the context of today’s finger-wagging by Dem leaders, is thinking that taking the moral high ground is some kind of victory.
IT’S NOT.
Fascists use your morals and guilt to lull you into ineffective action or inaction.
Dem leaders are begging for civility because they want to stay in power as much as the GOP. They don’t want anyone to rock the boat, and they’re too blind to see that it’s already sinking.
