X : I think your maps are wrong.
Me : I can tell you my maps are both wrong and imperfect. That's the nature of maps. The question is whether you find them useful or not?
X : No, I don't. I think they're wrong.
Me : Hmmm, are we going to go around in circles here?
... maps are an imperfect representation of the landscape. They have to be. A perfect map of France would be 1:1 scale which means it would be the size of France. In fact it would have to be France in order to be perfect. That's not very useful as maps go.
... on top of this, all maps contain models which means they're wrong. In the case of geographical maps, they are projections onto a 2D space of a 3D space. Hence we have different projections. There are lots of other things wrong with maps but in general we find them useful.
X : I understand that but your maps are wrong.
Me : All maps are.
X : Yes but yours aren't useful.
Me : Not to you it seems but they are to others.
X : Others shouldn't use them.
Me : What is it about the maps that cause you so much of a problem?
X : The commodity part. Cloud is not a commodity.
Me : Compute has become so. We care little about the specifics and more about volume of good enough standard enough.
X : We should care about the specifics. They types of servers, their capability and not getting locked in.
Me : Why do I get the feeling that your problem is with they say rather than the maps themselves.
X : Your maps are wrong and this serverless stuff is nonsense.
Me : Do you find just repeating yourself often wins the argument? What evidence do you have?
X : Large companies are leaving cloud and building internally. If they use it, then it will be hybrid. Serverless is for startups who can't afford their own.
Me : Hmmm. The only words of comfort I have are ... if you don't like change, you're going to hate irrelevance.
