In March 1990, Saddam Hussein personally ordered the execution of Farzad Bazoft, a reporter for the UK Observer. A month later Sen. Alan Simpson had a chummy meeting with Saddam and commiserated with him about journalists, calling them "spoiled and conceited" and "bastards."
Even worse than Alan Simpson's actions: Before Bazoft was executed, conservative MP Terry Dicks said he "deserves to be hanged." Lord Wyatt said the UK should “start maximising trade and stop talking about Farzad Bazoft."
After Bazoft was murdered by Saddam Hussein, there were internal discussions in Thatcher's government about whether to sanction Iraq. They decided no, because “We have a considerable commercial presence to protect in Iraq" and it "would be bad for our wider commercial interests"

I'm no booster of screen time, and am always concerned about the headlong rush to incorporate tech into education without care and vetting, but this article is journalistically questionable, and does more harm than good in advancing our understanding. nytimes.com/2018/10/26/sty…
I think it's interesting to know how Silicon Valley execs look at screens and tech, but this article is masquerading as something more, suggesting these views are authoritative and true, when really, it's all anecdotal.
The title and pull quote are out of a moral panic, not particularly illuminating as to the larger thesis. It's sensationalism, rather than grounded reporting. Again, I have worries about tech and screens, but "the devil?"

The nuclear physicist Harriet Brooks, who was probably the first person to notice the recoil of an atomic nucleus due to emissions during nuclear decay, was born #OTD in 1876.
Brooks was the first Canadian woman to work in the nascent field of nuclear physics. Her advisor & colleague Ernest Rutherford —she was his first grad student— lauded her work as a critical step in sorting out the mechanisms of nuclear decay.

There's a 15-paragraph New York Times article this morning w/the headline "Trump Says Payment to Stormy Daniels did not Violate Campaign Laws". In none of these paragraphs does the NYT even attempt to investigate the question of whether this is true, or what laws apply.
Lowly net-trash like Buzzfeed called a law professor and got a quote to explain the legal issues around what Trump now says he did, but the NYT just sorta put a claim up & let it stand. They quote an anonymous advocacy group saying this "strengthens the case", but don't elaborate
If you look, you realize there's very little *in* the NYT article; in fact it seems to be a common genre of NYT/WaPo article these days where journalists simply take a Trump tweet and write an article around it. Here they *imply*, but don't say, someone wrote the tweets for Trump
