"voters broadly were 59 percent less likely to back Republicans after hearing from them on immigration"

I told y'all, Americans like immigrants.

washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns…
Lots of people think Trump's immigrant-bashing was why he won in 2016, but I've never believed this.

It's why he won the GOP *primary*, sure. His base cares about immigration a ton.

But as soon as immigration becomes the central issue in a general election, GOP starts losing.
Of course now that Trumpism = conservatism in GOP base voters' minds, immigration is a litmus test. GOP candidates have to tow the new xenophobic party line or get primaried.
And of course if Trump decides to pivot back to the economy (and we don't get hit with a recession), or if the Dems run a silly bad candidate, my bet is that Trump will win in 2020 and the idea that America doesn't want immigration will become solidified like dinosaur poop.
Note that the GOP failed to pass any big changes to the immigration system before the Dems took the House. No repeal of family-based immigration. No attack on birthright citizenship.

America dodged a bullet.
But if Trump wins big enough in 2020 for the GOP to take back the House, I have a feeling we won't be so lucky a second time.
