Gather round #TOpoli. This is a story of three Presto cards. Specifically, why I now have three Presto cards.
I recently broke my Presto card. It cracked while I was closing my umbrella to jump on a streetcar.
The driver was understanding, told me I could transfer what I had on the card to a new card, if I had it registered. I did.
So I bought a new Presto card ($6), loaded some money on it, and waited the 24 hours before I could register it.
I registered the new card. Then I tried to transfer the funds from my broken card to my new card. But prestocard.ca wouldn't let me. So I called the 1-800 number.
After I got through to a @PRESTOcard agent, she explained that you can't transfer funds from a lost/broken card to a registered card. And I would have to buy a new card.
Since the agent could hear that my head was about to explode, she politely and kindly said she'd give me a $6 credit.
When I asked why, what, huh? She said one company is responsible for the card, the other for payment.
So, a day later, I got to a subway, purchased my third Presto card, waited 24 hours, then called the 1-800 to transfer the funds from my damaged card to my third card.
In the end it took a business week to sort out. And when I explain the story to friends, I have to repeat it several times, because they can't understand it.
Neither can I.
