THREAD ⬇️ 118 million midterm votes have been certified, meaning that more than half of eligible Americans cast a ballot. That’s the highest turnout in a midterm election in a century.

Here's what that turnout actually looked like
Voter turnout increased in House races across the country from 2014 to 2018, and the vast majority shifted left
The president’s party typically loses seats in midterms. Trump saw House Republicans lose a net of 40 seats in 2018 even as they gained 2 in the Senate.

Democrats lost a net of 63 seats in 2010 when the GOP took control of the House in the first election after Obama took office
The number of congressional Republicans who didn’t seek another term in 2018 was the highest in at least 88 years
Republicans sat out of 36 House races in 2018, compared to only 2 without a Democratic candidate
There were only 2 states that had lower voter turnout in 2018 than in 2014: Louisiana and Alaska
Turnout from 2014 to 2018 increased in every district—except 2
State election laws can influence turnout:

-North Dakota passed a new voter ID law months before the election requiring a home address
-Vermont adopted same-day voter registration in 2017
-Georgia enacted an "exact match" law requiring identical signatures for 2018 ballots
Though Democrats made big gains in the House, voters from both parties turned out in historic numbers this year.
