The Times is notorious for this, and don’t get shamed for it nearly enough. Usually because the reporters they rip off wouldn’t mind working there someday, and grumble over beers rather than slagging them publicly. But it’s egregious, and they should be embarrassed.
They did it with a piece @daveweigel and I wrote years ago—reconstructing our article beat by beat, reinterviewing exactly the same obscure sources, and condescending to make a glancing reference to the original article near the very end of the knockoff piece.
When I did grumble a bit—credit issues aside, it seemed petty & wasteful to spend hours or days recreating work we’d already done just to put their stamp on it—I heard from tons of reporters that this was a standard operating procedure there. Still is, apparently.
