A summary of seismicity of New Zealand for 2018. There were no major earthquakes with extensive aftershock sequences in 2018, e.g. 2016 Kaikōura, and @GeoNet located 19 515 earthquakes in New Zealand and the adjacent offshore region.
The pattern of shallow earthquakes (depth < 33 km) is typical, with much of the country susceptible to regular shallow seismicity, with lower rates in Northland/Auckland and southeast Otago.
Deeper earthquakes (depth > 33 km) also follows the typical pattern with almost no deep earthquakes in the central South Island.
A breakdown by magnitude has 272 events with M 4 – 5, 26 with M 5 – 6, and 3 with M 6+. The daily rate shows typical fluctuations, with a spike in early-June as a result of a minor swarm in the north-central North Island (geonet.org.nz/news/2MmejSGNm…).
103 regional moment tensor solutions were calculated in 2018, with the largest being Mw 7.0, and four with Mw ≥ 6.0. The two most significant earthquakes of 2018 were Mw 7.0, 112 km deep north of the North Island, and Mw 6.1, 216 km in the Taranaki region.
The Mw 7.0 event was felt throughout the North Island, and as far south as Christchurch. However, due to its depth there was no risk of a tsunami.
The Mw 6.1 event in the Taranaki region was the most widely felt earthquake in New Zealand in 2018, with GeoNet receiving more than 15 600 felt reports. This earthquake was felt over the entire North Island and northern South Island, and as far south as Dunedin.
