No that's a myth propagated by Bhadralok...Contrary to widely propagated myth Buddhism was never a religion of masses in mainland Bengal. There is simply no evidence of any kind neither Archaeological nor architectural evidence to support the assumption.
Presence of Buddhism wasn't a unique phenomenon either...Jainism was equally dominant in Orthodox Hindu Karnataka and Western India. And unlike Buddhism which vanished in Bengal none the less, Jainism is still thriving in those regions!
Yet nobody hears any Kannadiga/Marwari bragging how their is egalitarian Jainism and Shaivism/Vaishnavishm respectively and blah blah
