... and a public which asks their representatives to value #evidence will be the strongest driver of long-term #scienceadvice mechanisms.

Jeff Reading @SPH_Iloilo adds long-term funding to #scienceadvice mechanisms would also be an important step if we want long-term thinking
The workshop starts now ➡️ what are top 3 critical issues or structural themes in #Scienceadvice that an @INGSciAdvice presence in North America could address? #INGSA_NA18
And we're back after the interactive workshop, now discussing how to leverage the @INGSciAdvice network in #NorthAmerica context #INGSA_NA18, and what we can learn from other chapters
w/ @Kristiann_NZ @eliasmichaz @nifaruqui @IDRC_CRDI @JonesAishaD
.@Kristiann_NZ notes workshops done in established @INGSciAdvice chapters have brought various & diverse stakeholders together, providing training across disciplines in #scienceadvice #INGSA_NA18
. @JonesAishaD joins the panel live from #jamaica to discuss the jamaican experience in #scienceadvice. Jamaica is a small island (it can fit Quebec about 150 times) but there has nonetheless been cultural and knowledge exchange #INGSA_NA18
She further presents the policy formulation process in #jamaica, which is less linear than it seems. #scipol plays key roles with different players incl think tanks, research institutes, advisory bodies, universities, private consultants, and their Academy of Science #INGSA_NA18
The infrastructure of science in #jamaica is however not as developed as in other nations, and so they often depend on outside #Scienceadvice (from Latin America, US, Asia, Canada, others) in responding rapidly to emergencies, like extreme weather or epidemics #INGSA_NA18
And so although there are mechanisms in place to take #scienceadvice in #jamaica, their capacity to provide science advice still needs to be developed #INGSA_NA18 @JonesAishaD
v successful workshop earlier this year w/ @INGSciAdvice @UNESCO and others, on strengthening the carribean & jamaican capacity to drive #science into #policy through #scienceadvice
#scipol #INGSA_NA18 - @JonesAishaD
. @eliasmichaz describes the #mexican #mexico model of #scienceadvice - which began its development in 1989 with the establishment of a science advisory body. However, its agenda had been mostly directed at directing research rather than #science and #evidence back into #Policy
More recently, these goals have shifted. In 2013, the office of the Chief Science Advisor to the President of Mexico was established, which immediately had impacts on the upcoming 6-year presidency - a presidency which is soon coming to a close. #INGSA_NA18
This office fosters relationships with research and advisory bodies across #mexico, from the academies of science to the programs directing fiscal incentives for R&D. They are now joining @INGSciAdvice, which will strengthen their #scienceadvice capacity and network #INGSA_NA18
When deciding on issues like #climatechange, or the #H1N1 epidemic, their office has been a key player in the informed decisions made by their government - this office must endure into the following administrations for long-term impact #INGSA_NA18 - this is the challenge
A key goal is enshrining the office of Chief Science Advisor to the President of #Mexico by law ➡ this would cement their participation in @INGSciAdvice #INGSA_NA18, such that they maintain and foster access to a broad network of advisors for the benefit of Mexico & the world
.@nifaruqui, Director of Technology and Innovation @IDRC_CRDI adds to #INGSA_NA18 discussion: How do we define excellence in research? This has historically been peer-reviewed publication, but should include #EDI and #integrity. This new framework is now in use
#scipol #metrics
Many institutions in Canada would gladly leverage a network like @INGSciAdvice #INGSA_NA18 not only for #scienceadvice but also for communicating research to the public #scicomm

Including #northern communities & experts (of all types of knowledge) in this should be a priority
.@SciChefQC - a key result of the @INGSciAdvice workshops around the world, whether they are small meetings like #INGSA_NA18 today or larger scope as in the Caribbean (18 countries represented), should be to foster new relationships btw participants & build a greater network 💯
. @Kristiann_NZ clarifies that the role of these workshops is NOT to impose a #scienceadvice mechanism into new areas; quite the opposite - through networks & case studies @INGSciAdvice hopes for more diverse input ➡ drives more comprehensive advice & more sustainable solutions
. @nifaruqui @IDRC_CRDI - While there are funds to perform research within nations there is often very little available for building connections between nations #scidip. Should build capacity to drive exchange on shared values, incl international #francophone network #INGSA_NA18
There is an intergenerational flux about to occur, which needs to be supported in Canada, #NorthAmerica, and beyond. Many knowledgeable experts will retire. Training the #nextgeneration for #sciencediplomacy #scipol #scienceadvice should be a priority #INGSA_NA18
. @MollyShoichet mentions all science advisors, not just those in the south and those with #ChiefScienceAdvisor titles, should work together on shared goals. This incl #northern advisors, provinces with less defined #scienceadvice mechanism, and advisors at intl level #INGSA_NA18
