Unfortunately, the Rashid Tlaib story is playing out as I predicted. Not a one-day wonder. Obsessive coverage. Multiple op/eds. Panel discussions galore. Because of ONE SENTENCE uttered by a NEW MEMBER OF CONGRESS on her FIRST DAY IN OFFICE. A sign of degradation of discourse. 1
And the degradation of discourse is not about cursing! Something Donald Trump, Dick Cheney, John Boehner, Martha McSally, Joe Biden and oh so many others have done while in public office. As much as anything it is about media bending over backwards to deny liberal bias. 2
To be sure, plenty of people want to reduce coarsened public discourse. And there is a hearty debate to be had about how to handle Trump’s unfitness for office, corruption, lawlessness, etc, etc. (I am with Pelosi and Nadler on this.) But that is not the waynthis has been handled
