WHY HAS THE LOVE AFFAIR BETWEEN NEHRUISM AND MANY URBAN INDIAN INTELLECTUALS, LASTED SO LONG ?
From Sitaram Goel's 'Genesis & growth of Nehruism', Vol 1, 1993
Why does Nehruism continue to survive despite its obvious failures on several fronts?
Why does India's intellectual elite refuse to discuss Nehruism in some depth & evolve another ideology; which is more in tune with the social, cultural & political needs of an ancient people?
Pt. Nehru did not have to use brute force to implement 'Nehruvian' polices.
It appears that he succeeded without much difficulty because he represented to a large extent, the thinking of the post-1947 westernized Indian intellectuals.
The westernized Indian intellectuals consider themselves & are also considered by the traditional intelligentsia, as constituting the elite in Hindu society !
Their key characteristics, which made them fall in love with Nehruism, are highlighted in the following tweets -
5/
The westernized Hindu
-derives her knowledge of Hindu history & heritage from sources which are often hostile/alien/both.
-looks at Hindu history & heritage through the lens of competing ideologies & harbors a sense of inferiority vis-a-vis those ideologies.
The westernized Hindu
-is not familiar with frameworks of Hindu thought & cannot evaluate ideologies competing with/hostile to Hinduism, from a Hindu perspective.
-even if she critiques competing ideologies, she does so using their frameworks & thus, concedes their key claims.
The westernized Hindu
-tends to ignore unpleasant aspects of competing ideologies & selects from them/sometimes even invents for them, pleasant features; so that she may live in an all-is-well dream world.
The westernized Hindu
-prefers to keep quiet even if she notices unpleasant features of competing ideologies, as to speak-out would imply 'being communal'.
-may criticize ugly behavior like riots & terrorism but hesitates to comment on the ideologies behind such behavior.
The westernized Hindu often behaves in a cowardly manner by
-frowning upon those who highlight to her, unpleasant facts about competing ideologies.
-appeasing ideological bullies, whose crimes she ignores or tries to rationalize, as a response to some kind of Hindu aggression.
Nehruism, at its core, is alienated from India's indigenous culture & is submissive towards various imperialist ideologies.
This also being the thinking of most westernized Hindus, Pt. Nehru was thus able to impose his will on the Indian establishment, relatively easily.

The westernized Hindu intellectuals propped up Nehruism & helped spread it, far and wide.
In return, Nehruism patronized & further strengthened their dominance in academia, media etc.
This symbiotic relationship continues to this day.
AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER
