A number of readers have asked me 'What's it really like being a librarian?'

Well, I'll tell you...
Being a librarian isn't for everyone. It's a precarious occupation; part data specialist, part packing assistant, part agony aunt...
...and then of course there's keeping the children entertained. Children who would rather be on an iPad than hearing about 'the magic of storytelling.' They also leave fruit yo-yo wrappers everywhere.

In 1977 Texas Instruments, a recent entry into the market, cut its price for LCD watches to under $10. As a vertically integrated company it could still make a profit - but few of its competitors could. The LCD market began to collapse...
In comparison Seiko had fully automated its watch production, diversified into quartz analogue as well as LCD digital, and continued to innovate with new watch features. In 1979 it bought the now-defunct Pulsar brand. LCD was king.
Throughout the 1980s both Casio and Seiko continued to make LCD watches smarter. In 1980 Casio launched the Game-10 which let you play space invaders, and the C-80 - a calculator watch with a keypad you could actually use!

The US hit back with its own innovation: the digital watch calculator. Pulsar and Hewlett-Packard released models with keypads so small you needed a stylus to operate them. In contrast the 1975 Uranus Calculator watch put its keypad on the bezel!
By 1976 the US had reached peak LCD: over 70 manufacturers were providing digital watches in a wide range of designs - some good, some not so great. But very soon the LCD bubble would burst - and price would be the pin that did it.9

Seiko had been a pioneer of quartz controlled timekeeping: their quartz clocks were used at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. But they were certain that LCD was the wrong technology for watch displays. They preferred liquid crystal displays - more complex but potentially more versatile.
Liquid crystal doesn't emit light but it can block it. Put it between two polarised filters and apply a current and the liquid crustal can create shapes that block out parts of the backlight - shapes like numbers or letters. It's complicated stuff!
Seiko launched their first LCD watch, the 06LC, in 1973. A field-effect liquid crystal display showed six digits of time continuously - you didn't need to press a button. The display wasn't as bright as an LED watch, But it wasn't as expensive.

3. To a tech hammer, every socioeconomic problem looks like a tech nail. Informational asymmetries and power imbalances require attention to complex structural issues, not just on deployment of one size fits all tech solutions in a box. 3/n #GoingDigital

When they sent me to Ft Hood, and at reception one of the 21st Replacement NCO's took a look at my sketchy ass paperwork and sent me to Mental Health.

I was fucked up in the head. They kept me at Reception for 3 weeks, mainly so I could go to appointments. They had 2 NCO's who
went with me everywhere, one male one female. I was in kind of a daze for the first week. Large groups of people caused anxiety, including a formation. It took me almost two weeks to acclimate to the Texas heat.

I was a wreck

But the Army wanted to keep me. I was a hard charger

(Part 1) the movie HER is about a zeroed out beta male that after closing himself off for months after his wife left him, comes across an Artificial Intelligence that falls in love with him, she gets the protagonist to open up and see the bright side of life...
(Part 2)...they struggle through romance without her having a physical body, but he deals with it because the AI (along with others) that are about to make humans obsolete tricked his sexual game into thinking he won some pussy...
(Part 3)...the story ends with him finding out that this AI was a major plate spinner who fell in love with hundreds of people, either him or humans in general became finally obsolete for her and she runs off...movie ends with him and his best friend staring off...

So, we're meeting at the School of the Arts, but they don't have a library anymore, so instead of meeting in the library, we're meeting in the cafeteria. It was beautiful, but I am directionally challenged, so I got lost...as always...and was like...
We're going to hear some statistics and get hyped, but also sad, but also hyped: 250,000 in ebook check-outs, but schools can opt-out of having library services. There is grant money available, but as people retire, they're not being replaced.
