Results from the new Politico-Morning Consult poll shows why the politics of the shutdown are so bad for Trump and GOP senators who abet him.

First, only 24% of voters consider the border wall to be a top priority. Half of Republican voters do not consider it a top priority.
Second, by 3 to 1, voters say a president should take all steps necessary to AVOID a shutdown, with only 22% saying a president should allow a temporary shutdown to achieve policy goals. Republican voters oppose shutdowns by 48% to 41%
By an even wider margin -- 67% to 18% -- voters say members of Congress should take all necessary steps to avoid a shutdown. Increasingly, the shutdown will become a lead weight for Republican senators who won't break from Trump.
Bottom line: Republicans have a compound problem here. Voters don't like shutdowns in the first place, in this case Trump and his GOP are shutting down the government over something a large majority of voters do not consider to be a top priority.
