I feel there‘s a misunderstanding when it comes to the word “global” in global value chains (and in global Britain) - not by David, but it’s worthwhile to point it out (short thread)
While industry has become quite global and you will find global parts in a surprising number of things (just think of PRC made...), this does not imply that everything industry does is global.
A lot of industries organize regionally. They have a regional hub, regional suppliers etc. Some of their input might still come from afar, but the emphasis is on regional.
It might well be that the regional input is at its peak (thanks to @UKIPHighWycombe for the helpful read). But it is and remains significant.
Even more important the regional hub structure means you largely produce for the region. That’s what the Japanese investors were shooting for.
The same is true for Global Britain. No country I know of that wants to enlarge its global footprint has successfully done so by reducing its regional footprint. The current plans for enlarging embassies are hardly sufficient for the post-Brexit era.
