High schoolers wrote a bill to shine light on the FBI's cold case files of Civil Rights-era murders of black people.

Trump signed it yesterday, with a statement undermining it.

“I read it as I don’t know why he signed it," an SPLC rep told @Cam_Langford.

Great story by my colleague in Houston.

There's a long history of this kind of presidential signing statement. The practice spiked during the George W. Bush admin, which the ABA slammed as undermining the rule of law and separation of powers. (Archives) web.archive.org/web/2012061516…
Obama dramatically reined in - but didn't end - this tradition, and signing statements seem to be proliferating under Trump once again.

This is the second time that Giuliani has admitted on TV that the Trump Tower Moscow negotiations went on right up to the election.

The first time was with George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week” in December.
Reminder: BuzzFeed’s @JasonLeopold and @A_Cormier_ — yes, the same reporting team — produced the scoop that the Trump Org planned to offer Putin a $50 million penthouse if the Moscow tower deal went forward.

Consider what that means:

Both Trump and Putin stood to financially benefit from a real estate deal that — as Giuliani repeatedly made clear — had been on the table at least all the way up to election day.

This WaPo piece attributed to “people familiar” asserts the denial was much more expansive, but BuzzFeed notes what the office actually released publicly is unclear.

One thing is certain: BuzzFeed and the reporters behind this story have put out indispensable reporting on the Mueller probe in general — and the subject of the article in particular.

That remains true however the SCO’s carefully worded statement is ultimately clarified.

Any news story that fails to label this tweet the raw racist and anti-Muslim bigotry that is — without qualification — is more interested in maintaining access to power than informing the public of observable reality.
At risk of validating the underlying premise that prayer rugs are sinister, it’s worth noting that the tweet is predicated on a dodgy story — one with a long history of similar lies.

This also seems to be an instance that calls for revulsion that’s stronger than a fact-check.

The noxious premise behind the report is reprehensible.

Yesterday was the 45th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. Four girls were murdered: Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, & Carol McNair.

McNair was 11; the others were 14.
The FBI identified Thomas Blanton, Herman Cash, Robert Chambliss, and Bobby Cherry as the perpetrators, but they weren't tried for years and Cash died without having been charged. (For his part, Chambliss blamed Gary Rowe, an FBI informant.)
The perps in question were KKK -- specifically, UKA, United Klans of America, but even more specifically they were members of a small but even more radical splinter group called the Cahaba Boys.

Listen up kids. So when #Trump wants to replace #SNAP benefits with a box of prepackaged dry goods, it’s not just about #fruits and #veggies. It’s about power, race, ethnicity, labor, energy, disability, and language as well.
2) What people eat and what people are supposed to eat and what people had access to eat has always been informed by power. In ancient times, it may have been the nobility eating meat and wheat bread while peasants ate potages. Nowadays, it’s what people should not eat.
3) Just because people are poor does not mean that they do not have their own food preferences, ideas about food, or habits around food. Folks who use SNAP/#foodstamps will use their benefits, as they are able, to buy the food they can afford within these frameworks.
