Anyone who can look back at their 16 year old self and be like “yup, I totally had the reasoning abilities of an adult” does not currently have adult reasoning abilities. 16 year olds are not adults. That’s not what age of consent means.
Addition: even if we accept the premise that a 16 y/o can reason like an adult. No one can make reasonable decisions w/out adequate information. MANY American teens do not get quality comprehensive #sexed in order to make educated sexual choices.
We can’t claim teens “can make their own choices” when we limit their knowledge of their options, including info on communicating & listening to boundaries. This means quality sex ed for all genders & sexualities. Until we have better sex ed, no teen can make adult sexual choices

I am not questioning @shaunking’s race. I am not questioning that he has done some good work. I AM questioning how he handles critique & calls for accountability from other black activists & radicals. I AM questioning how he has decided to use his power.
I AM suspicious of his doubling down with lawyers plus screenshots plus tagging. I AM disappointed that no matter how many of us say “Hey, is this how you wanna handle this? Is this how you lead?” he has left up these tweets. He has not examined his abuse of power.
How people respond when hurt or angry or afraid reveals a lot. We are asking for humility, accountability & real leadership that doesn’t rely on silencing, domination, coercion, violence or the prison-industrial complex (including cops & lawyers).

Being black in America is wanting to defend #ShaunKing from racists while critiquing him & calling him in on his abuse of power/influence toward other black people. Being black in America means knowing that white people will delight any time black folks fight.
Being black in America means knowing that black folks do harm to each other & we are inclined to ignore that harm too long to keep up appearances for white folks.
Being black in America means recognizing that we have all learned & internalized white surpremacist heteropatriarchal modes of relating that hold us back & working daily to learn new ways of being. But white supremacy gives us no time, space or privacy to do that work.

I get that no one wants to feel accused. I get it’s hard to be in the spotlight. But he knows what tagging & screenshotting folks like this will do. One is a black queer woman college student apparently? Anyone who uses their power in this way is suspect to me. #ISupportClarissa

This Christmas Eve I am unfortunately reminded of an event that occured on this day last year. It was mid-afternoon and I was running some last minute errands ahead of our dinner and festivities that evening.
As I was driving home I came to a major crossroads and heard that awful sound, that of a crash.
That sound. I turned to the other side of the crossroads to see a cyclist’s body rolling across the back end of a car and land in the middle of the road. I stopped mid-turn to hopefully see him stagger to his feet and was staring intently. Please move. Please move. Please move.

The Aberfan Disaster killed 116 children and 28 adults.

On Friday morning, the 21st October 1966, a wave of coal waste slid down the Aberfan Valley.

At approximately 9.15am this coal waste hit Pantglas Junior School, Aberfan and destroyed a number of houses nearby. In less than five minutes 116 children and 28 adults were killed in the disaster- the majority within the primary school walls.

"observability is designing code so anyone can maintain it" is another way of saying "observability is instrumenting your code at the right level of abstraction/capturing enough detail so that you can debug by asking any new question, at any time, without shipping any new code."
good code is well instrumented code. good code makes services you can understand from the outside, without having to leap to heroics like strace or gdb or re-instrumenting it just to understand what it does.
good engineers write code observability-first. they write instrumentation first in order to understand the impact of the changes they're considering making. then they write (and check!) instrumentation along the way to make sure they shipped what they thought they did.
