1/ This is all going to be a lot easier if the more privileged among us starting wrapping our heads around the idea, now, that there will never be an apology. There will never be "we were wrong", there will be embarrassed throat clearing and the usual suspects will trundle on.
2/ There may be justice, but there will never be reconciliation or atonement. That's not how things work in the past-blind yet history-blinded USA.
3/ POC and LGBTQ folks already know this, of course, and y'all are prepared. I'm more easing people like me into the mental framework. /xx

1/ Friday RPG thread. Mute if its not your thing! (told you, new followers.) What happened in the last two DARK MARS sessions, the BLADES IN THE DARK/SAVAGE WORLDS mashup?
2/ Session 6, the group decided to grab turf, specifically an information-brokering ring (turf as subcultures/organizations, not territory). They just needed to take down the Gang leader, a drug addict with a taste for Martian art, and his deadly VR-addicted knife-thug!
3/ The Whisper used her fake grad-student ID to get genuine Martian art from a professor, The Slide planted it at a restaurant the Mark frequented, and used the Fiddle Game to convince him to take it back to HQ as an extortion payment.

Last night I was prepping my "BLADES IN THE DARK on Mars" campaign for this weekend and I am just boggled, writing up the Session 07 recap, at how bloody dense the world, connections, and entanglements already are, with such simple, elegant mechanics.
Considering I've slotted @PEG_Games SAVAGE WORLDS into the infrastructure for scene play pretty seamlessly, I think the very simple "Downtime/Consequences/Long Term Projects/Entaglements" BitD system is that little miracle of design -- not overbuilt, easily portable.

Women's ads are about *conforming*. The implication for good behavior is in the negative space.

Tell you what, though, as soon as the leading cause of murder among men is their wives, we'll get right on more explicit text.

In terms of feeling like I Am A Real Writer, I Do Real Writer Things, nothing really compares to being asked to write an introduction to someone else's collection.
Which actually feeds nicely into something I was thinking about over the weekend: that the human brain simultaneously is bad at novelty AND bad at accepting change.
If I go back to the first few months of my Twitter (oh, 2009 Seanan, you had no idea how weird this was all going to get), I am literally counting down to the release of ROSEMARY AND RUE. Like, "186 days to release I am freaking out" is a legit sentiment.

I am sick of racist jerks literally dehumanizing Marie Kondo because they haven’t read her book and don’t know how to comprehend what she actually says.
I am a book person. A huge book person. When I moved from Berkeley to Ann Arbor for law school, I had 20-ish boxes of books—so many the post woman didn’t believe they were books and made me open them to prove they could be media mail. I never got rid of a book, ever.
I started reading at the age of I can’t remember because it was too young. I read through prekindergarten. I sat in the corner and read through much of my young years. I currently read, on average, 200+ books a year.

I *write* books for a living.

I am helping a woman who took my investing course. She is having a hard time wrapping her head around the idea of a 401k. Why? Because she has always been told that it's "just a super safe place to put your retirement money."
Never has it occurred to her that she needed to invest that money, and in the capricious stock market, no less. She believed that:

"Investing in your 401k" was synonymous with

"investing in your future"

NOT

"Investing in potentially volatile asset classes to max. growth"
I mention it because I know a lot of financial educators take for granted what seem like simple ideas to us. There's infinite confusion out there, folks

thinking about how a lot of people's trouble with wrapping their heads around nazis as an actual threat is the thought that "if there was really a problem, the cops would take care of it", followed by the inability/unwillingness to believe that cops would actually support them
cops have massive latitude to beat the shit out of most anybody with little to no consequences and that this is almost never used against various flavors of white supremacists would say something obvious, but so many people just can't/won't grip around "the cops like the nazis"
thoughts of how the ACLU couldn't seem to understand how the cops wouldn't do their job at the Charlottesville hate rally - they seemed utterly baffled that police might favor a white supremacist organization over those protesting them

I find this NYT essay on genetics and race really troubling—it muddies the waters on what we know in a really ominous way. (Thread.) nytimes.com/2018/03/23/opi…
Its seeming premise is that recent scientific advances support the idea that biological differences between human races are real and significant, but it provides not a single example of such a finding.
Reich offers copious examples of genetic differences between localized human populations, but those aren't evidence of differences between races. In fact, most of his examples are of differences WITHIN racial groups.
