Let's look at the timing of William P. Barr's audition for the job of Trump's AG. Although he previously was known to Trump, Barr put forward his candidacy in a forceful way on June 8, 2018. That's the date of his unsolicited memo. /1
The memo, while admitting "I am in the dark about many facts," argues that there was no valid obstruction case regarding the decision to fire Comey. But why then? What had happened in the previous few days. int.nyt.com/data/documenth… /2
One possibility is this report from May 29, 2018, in the NY Times. The article describes Sessions' previous offer to resign. It also was the first report of Trump's request that Sessions reverse his decision to recuse. nytimes.com/2018/05/29/us/… /3
It is possible that this report set off alarm bells in the Mueller camp. Perhaps they realized that Sessions and/or his recusal were at risk, and wanted to better the odds that the next AG would not threaten the investigation. /4
It's been reported that Barr and Mueller worked together, that they are friends, and that their wives are friends. Perhaps they had already discussed the possibility that Barr might take on a new challenge, at an age when most are ready to retire. voanews.com/a/graham-attor… /5
May 29th to June 8th. That seems just about the right amount of time for Barr to draft his 19 page memo, and put his name into contention for the AG job. /6x
