The @ICE_Foundation has been abolished.
But what was it?

#thread
Allegedly a "grassroots effort," the ICE Foundation (2010-2018) was a non-profit org led by former ICE & DHS officials turned corporate leaders & lobbyists that used to "bring together govt & industry leaders" from tech, mass incarceration and elsewhere, ostensibly for charity.
It never received media attention except for when @alexkotch wrote this great article breaking it down last summer, which "raised questions about [ICE-F's] possible inside access to ICE officials, and to those assigning government contracts." readsludge.com/2018/08/22/ice…
Most corporate sponsors of past @ICE_Foundation events have scored ICE contracts. Every yr 2011-2018 the non-profit hosted an "ICE Recognition Gala" at the Mayflower Hotel regularly keynoted by DHS & ICE leadership. ICE-F tried to entice sponsors with VIP access to speakers.
@ICE_Foundation chairman/@pfizer chief security officer John Clark, former ICE deputy assistant secretary, 2015: "We’re there to ... make sure corporate America is aware ... [of the need to] enhance ICE's capabilities..." This is their attempt at pr:
Stephen Rubley CEO of Thomson Reuters SS, which sells ICE "a continuous monitoring & alert service that provides real-time jail booking data to support the identification & location of aliens" + "access to a vast license-plate scanning database," was on the @ICE_Foundation board.
As told by @alexkotch, Foundation treasurer Mary Loiselle joined a GEO Group subsidiary the month ICE awarded it a $72 mil contract; and David Venturella, formerly on the ICE-F board of directors, is now GEO's senior vice president of business development. readsludge.com/2018/08/22/ice…
The GEO Group the biggest private prison corp is ICE's go-to fed contractor (bit.ly/2u4WaLK), & was the @ICE_Foudation's #1 corporate sponsor it seems. GEO contributed 35k to ICE-F's 2018 annual golf fundraiser, attended by several DHS attorneys & ICE corporate collabos.
@ICE_Foundation was referred to in passing by @theintercept & @reveal as a group that supports "the men & women of ICE" and "ICE employees & their families." ICE-F also said it sponsored scholarships for "victims of human trafficking" & families of ICE agents "killed on the job."
The 1 publicly identified beneficiary of an ICE-F scholarship was Evelyn Chumbow, a trafficking survivor from Cameroon, the inaugural recipient of (and apparent spokesperson for) the Granting Courage Initiative, created in 2014 with some ICE $. The ICE Foundation may have ceased all operations, but the Homeland Security Philanthropy Council, a "new & separate organization...will take up many of the positive legacy programs of the former ICE foundation." ICE-F Exec Director James Barchiesi is overseeing the transition.
And the Border Patrol Foundation's still kicking!
