Le Monde (correctly) says Brexit crisis is one legitimacy: Who legitimately expresses the popular will? The 2016 referendum, elected parliamentarians, the polls? lemonde.fr/idees/article/…
And also says (correctly) that "France is probably not the best placed to give the British lessons to get out of the crisis."

But then retreats into lack of imagination. "Still, it's their problem and enough is enough." Meaning what?
"The EU must protect itself" from British turmoil. How? One senses many would like to see Britain (or England, specifically) punished for being stupid. There's an undertone of "Wouldn't that teach them a salutary lesson."
But any EU action that punishes Britain will be self-punishing. It isn't a zero-sum game. There's really no option but patience, waiting for Britain to decide, and trying to make whatever happens work out well.
"Make Brexit as painful as possible" has a Treaty of Versailles logic.
