Tomorrow -- Jan. 19 -- marks the 15th anniversary of arguably the first viral moment in American politics.

The Dean Scream nbcnews.com/politics/meet-…
Two weeks before Facebook was created, a year before YouTube, and two years before Twitter, denizens of the growing internet turned Dean's "scream" into mp3 remixes like this one: progmatism.com/media/dean_thr…
The folks at JibJab -- remember them? -- made the scream a central gag in one of their early videos
And even years later after the scream, people turned it into dance remixes, YouTube performances, and that famous Chappelle comedy skit cc.com/video-clips/gl…
And in our Internet Age, the scream became a forerunner to other viral moments in American politics over the last 15 years:

Macaca
Rick Perry's "Oops"
47%
Clint Eastwood
Marco Rubio drinking that water nbcnews.com/video/rubio-ha…
But there was another story behind Dean's scream: It played much differently to those in attendance -- including yours truly -- versus those who saw it on TV.

Reason: The mic for the TV cameras drowned out the rowdy crowd.

And I remember Tom Harkin more fired up than Dean!
One more perception-vs-reality component of the scream: Dean didn't lose the Dem nomination because of the scream.

“We took third that day,” Joe Trippi told me.

Dean added for this story: “What did in our candidacy was ourselves."
