1. Here's the thing about conservatives, "religious freedom," and their support of institutions that discriminate against LGBTQ folks. These same conservatives espouse shredding the social safety net and having those services provided by private charities, like churches.
2. So on one hand they say "these are private, religious entities and they should be allowed to live by their values." On the other, they say "public, secular institutions that provide services like education, assistance to the homeless, abortion counseling, etc." should be cut.
3. So if conservatives get their safety net shredding way, there are many communities in which discriminating churches like the Pence's will be the only place a hungry, homeless, or otherwise needy person can go. It's already the case in many localities, esp. red ones.
4. So if you combine a decimated social safety net (the GOP wet dream) w/ protection for discriminating churches, you get a world in which LGBTQ foks, esp. young, vulnerable folks, will have nowhere to go for help.
5. The sad part is, that is exactly what these "compassionate conservatives" want--a world with no LGBTQ people. They just want to get to that future while still holding on to their self-conception as kind, caring people.
6. So if your faith tells you that LGBTQ folks are sinners and can not be tolerated by your community, then you better also support a robust, secular system of social welfare to care for such people who you refuse to. Or else, you are not your brother/sister's keeper.
