How to understand Theresa May's position...

Imagine someone with the misfortune to be standing on not one, but two land mines. Shift a bit one way, and the one under your other foot goes off, and vice versa. But stay *absolutely still*, and you get to live another day.
That's why her red lines don't shift, and why she calls EU leaders and wastes their time by repeating exactly the same thing as they've heard from her before.

Because any change at all, and the Tory party will split.

So what she needs is a way to be yanked right out of there.
One such yanking mechanism might be a GE.

Another would be an amendment that forces her to behave in a different way. She can't actively court it, but she can quietly hope for it.

But until some external factor comes into play, she's going to stay right there on those mines.
