My MLK Day thread: don't believe the narrative the mainstream pushes about Dr King. He was much more than just a nonviolent protester with a dream
He was committed to ending injustice, period. Not just for African Americans bit for all oppressed people here in the US and across the world.
Everyone focuses on his dream speech but he has many more powerful speeches and letters. One of the most important was 'the letter from Birmingham jail' africa.upenn.edu/Articles_Gen/L…

He spoke of the true enemy: those who favor 'peace' over Justice
Without Justice, there is no peace. Without Justice, crimes are committed against humanity without any empathy, compassion, or love. So Justice is the true goal!
Also, he worked to unite not just minorities but also poor whites as well with his 'Poor People's Campaign'. I honestly believe this is the reason why he was assassinated: trying to bring all together to fight the power structure. kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/p…
While there are people who try to say MLK Jr was a Republican, he simply wasn't. To be honest, I can't say was a Democrat either. What he was is a truth teller. He believed that Justice must be achieved economically as well as socially.
That's why he was in favor of one of the most important programs that progressives support: a job guarantee. It was also an idea FDR believed in as well. It helps to mitigate the inequities in the economic system. levyinstitute.org/publications/p…
In conclusion, MLK Jr was much more than an activist with a 'dream', he was a man committed to achieving equality for all in all aspects. Don't dishonor his legacy by painting him as just a nonviolent demonstrator!
