Here are the charges Alex Salmond faces. Multiple charges of sexual assault, and two of attempted rape.
Mr Salmond made no formal plea in court and was released on bail pending further examination.
To be clear, a plea wouldn't normally be entered at this stage of the criminal procedure. Mr Salmond made a statement outside court insisting that he is "innocent of any criminality" and said he would defend himself "to the utmost".
Mr Salmond has now left Edinburgh Sheriff Court, having been released on bail. His next date in court is still to be set.
I know this same warning has been posted many times today, but let's underline it one more time - this is an active case. Tweets can constitute contempt of court - endangering both court proceedings, and the liberty of people posting them, even anonymously
