Next week, @blackburndarwen will jointly host with Blackburn with Darwen Interfaith Forum a ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. #HMD2019
As a local authority we have committed to reject hatred in all its forms. History and even recent events can show where hatred can lead if it remains unchecked. #HMD2019
This annual commemoration of the holocaust
reminds us why it is so important to listen to the lessons of the past so that
we can all play a part in creating a safer, more tolerant future for everyone. #HMD2019
I am very pleased a number of schools will be joining us on the day. It is important for children to learn about what can happen if we don't reject hatred. bit.ly/2HdyYUU #HMD2019

Today, I have written to my fellow @blackburndarwen councillors updating them on the clean-up element of #bwdycall campaign. There is so much going on to make the borough a better place and my and my colleagues' role is to help support people who want to make a difference.
It's such a shame that some people still think it is okay to drrop litter. It's not. It's selfish and it's antisocial. But groups like @BlackburnTidy and Keep Darwen Tidy and other community minded individuals do a great job in keeping our borough clean and green.

My dad Len fled Nazi Germany alone aged 13 in 1936, when his father sent him to England. Arrested on his 16th birthday, the British interned him in Canada as an ‘enemy alien’. His school championed Len’s cause & he was sent back to the UK. He's now a lovely 95 yr old #HMD 3/

1. I remember when the Holocaust hit home.

I was 14 years old watching Schindler's list at @StColumbasHerts, during our history class.

I'd never comprehended the hate throughout history towards Jews and this movie hit me like a punch to the stomach.

2. The movie tormented me and revealed both the worst and best of humans.

At the end when I saw the scene where Schindler was given the ring inscribed "He who saves one life, saves the entire world I burst in to tears."

3. I remember the exact moment I burst in to tears, it was when Schindler said

I COULD HAVE DONE MORE

More, really? Its thanks to people like Schindler that despite 6 million Jews murdered, European Jewry, me, my family and Jews across Europe survived...

[Thread] Based on recent discussions with @SamuelSokol, @TarikCyrilAmar, and @AuschwitzMuseum over the continued debates regarding the "naming" of concentration camps in Poland, I've decided it's time for a thread, b/c this is not about history but the present in Poland.
What has many Poles (and state-run museums) up in arms, is ANY connection of the word "Poland" with Holocaust sites (and more broadly behavior- hence the "correction" above.) They particularly rail against the term "Polish" death or concentration camps. edition.cnn.com/2018/02/01/eur…
The argument is that Poles did not establish or run these camps...which is absolutely correct. But the problem is, no one really thinks Poles built Auschwitz, etc. Sure, there are ignorant people out there or some students, but I defy you to find a scholar making this argument.
