I think @Twitter can build a @Linkedin replacement. Just a thought experiment. One lacks what the other has.
People have an incentive to sign up on @LinkedIn - it’s their digital profile, an easy to create “about me” website. However, why should anyone be active on LinkedIn unless they are looking for a new job, or have an update to share?
On the other hand, user acquisition for @Twitter is hard. “Do I need another social media account?!” However, Twitter is a much more sticky product. People keep coming back to it for news and updates once they get a hang of it.
What if Twitter could allow people to build a more elaborate profile, with options to share current job, experience and schools they attended. It doesn’t have to be as detailed as LinkedIn.
I’d like to know what my connections or people I‘d like to follow are working on, what’s latest in the space I’m interested in, what are people reading etc.
I think building real connections on Twitter is much easier than reaching out to people on LinkedIn. On Twitter you meet people, hear them regularly, chat over time and build a more meaningful connection.
LinkedIn users are rarely active. They never check their InMails and hardly anybody cares to share meaningful content. It’s mostly just self-promotion or publicity of some company event.
Also, 2nd degree connections doesn’t mean much - most likely your friend ran into this person at a random networking event and never spoke with them again. And, 3rd degree connections are like your friend’s friend knowing a celebrity, who you’ll never have a chance to meet.
Instead on @Twitter the world is your audience. And who knows the opportunity you’ve been waiting for is available with someone not in your immediate network.
Many people active on @Twitter also use it to post jobs. And in my experience people have been way more responsive to a DM than an InMail (0 success rate actually). Again there is no motivation to be active on @LinkedIn
So probably a Twitter profile with a “Hire” button alongside “Follow”?@jack @jeffweiner
