Pilot Season for writers after they turn in their scripts. A THREAD.

So, I went out with three new shows this year. I love them all for different reasons. Two have already been passed on. Beautiful little shows. The heartache is real but this is the the gig.
One about a Mexican/Salvi family the other was about Mexican, Afro-Caribean & Trans people forming their own bonds. Both were filled with heart & tons of humor. One took two years to write. THIS IS THE GIG. We try. We fail. We keep trying.
Still waiting on one. Will probbly know next week. And then I figure out what is next. This is why I ALWAYS have a slate of development. Always have several things I'm working on. If this doesn't go then I turn to that. This is the hustle. This is the gig.
We take the hits. We keep our eyes open for other things that delight us & we try again. We live to see another day. We open our hearts to falling in love with new characters. We KEEP GOING. WE KEEP TELLING OUR STORIES.
So amid all of the tweets, I share about @OneDayAtATime & its success. Know that there are just as many failures. It's what we sign up for doing this. And it is okay. The wins outweigh the losses eventually.

So, chin up, y'all. And keep on trucking.

Writer Thread: Pilots & staffing. This is pilot season. Writers are waiting for their pilots to get a pickup. If you are interested in staffing you should already have an agent. If you don't have an agent then it is unlikely you'll staff this year. Focus on getting repped!
If you are repped then READ THE TRADES. Follow the shows you think you are right for. Then make sure to communicate with your reps about your focus. And have a sample that is appropriate to the show you hope to meet on.
I write a multi-cam. Two of the three shows I have going out this year are multi. I will be reading multi samples. I maaaay read a single if the rep promises there are jokes. If I get ten pages in and there are no jokes I will stop reading. MAKE SURE THEY SEND THE RIGHT THING!

Audition Thread: I used to volunteer to be "a reader" for a well-known casting director just to see auditions. It was invaluable. You'd see how actors would sabotage themselves. All the CD wanted was for them to do it well. Have a take. Be committed.
I would get the actors & try to provide warm energy to calm them before they entered the room. Once an actress came in & I learned that she "crashed" the audition. She found out about it & showed up. She said it felt old Hollywood -- showed her hustle. The CD kicked her out.
And I got to see how there is a process. That there are rules. That there is a time & place for things. There is a difference between "hustle" and "being inappropriate."

I just had an epiphany: #beautiful has become my new favorite word. That may seem strange given my circumstances. In June 2017 I was diagnosed with incurable stage IV #lungcancer.
I naively thought that maybe my lifetime of being a health and fitness junkie would insulate me from such a medical fate. Wrong. And So here I am, fifty-one years old and not sure how much time I have left on earth. I know I could, or maybe should, feel angry, cheated, jaded.

I was thinking. There's probably a lot of #writers that really want to get involved in the #WritingCommunity , but maybe don't know how or feel a little lost. So I decided to create a little guide on Book Twitter to go over the basics for anyone who needs it! A thread.
Common writing age-group acronyms:
MG = Middle Grade
YA = Young Adult
NA = New Adult (you may see a little conflict over this topic, so be wary. To quickly summarize, it's an age group between YA and A that typically depicts people between 18 - 30)
A = Adult
Common writing terms:
Beta Reader = Someone who reads and gives you feedback on the early drafts of your story. They read bc they enjoy.
CP/Critique Partner = A partnership where you read their story and they read yours for feedback.
1st, 2nd (X)st draft = stages of editing

What they don't realize is that by doing that they alienate people. #thread 👇
* When junior people see their managers as very strong, they might be scared to share their opinion
* When senior people see their managers as strong on things that don't make sense, they might think they're an idiot and not say anything
I think the best thing we can do with our teams is create a vulnerability based trust where we can be who we really are. We're never as strong as when we're ourselves.
