Don’t we have several old words? “Social democracy”? Or just “large welfare states”?
If “the right” is able to pull off that rhetorical conflation, it’s because a lot of people decided it was edgy to say they were for “socialism” when what they actually wanted wasn’t socialism; it was a Scandinavian style market economy with a very large welfare state.
Which is baffling, because actual socialism seems to be pretty consistently a huge clusterfuck, while market economies with big welfare states are sometimes nice enough places. I have no idea why someone advocating the latter would adopt the label of the former.

I should probably know better than to wade into Abortion Twitter, but… on what planet do people imagine a woman carries a viable, healthy fetus to term & then decides to abort on the delivery table? Does anyone seriously believe this is a scenario we have to worry about?
The only reason anyone terminates a pregnancy that late is that something has gone unexpectedly and grievously wrong—usually so badly wrong that the choice is between termination and a slower, more painful death for the neonate.
I’m profoundly uninterested in performative outrage from people so morally stunted they believe it’s obligatory under those circumstances to prolong the child’s suffering and make the parents watch.

If I understand this correctly, Trump’s defense of his foreign policy is that the US Intelligence Community is wrong about everything, but he knows the real score... somehow? Fox hosts, I guess?
God knows the IC gets it wrong on occasion—but why would anyone think it’s likely that Trump knows any better than they do? The only reason presidents have any special insight into foreign threats is... access to the IC.
Ironically, Trump seems determined to reproduce the conditions that often lead to the IC getting it wrong: extreme pressure to tailor intelligence concusions to match what’s politically expedient.

Blaming “Google” or “Facebook” for journalism’s problems is a lot line blaming Craigslist: The fundamental problem is the Internet making some aspect of the traditional business model unviable; the company’s more messenger than cause.
If Craig Newmark had decided to sell yoga pants for a living, it would still be ludicrous to think classified ads & personals would stay bundled to newspapers, a phenomenon completely tied to the economics of newsprint & physical distribution.
You can point to specific things Facebook in particular did that probably made things worse. But the core problems are a function of the disappearance on economic & technical constraints on information consumption. Breaking up FB doesn’t bring those back.

1/ There's an FT article circulating with the narrative that Chinese startups are more productive because their teams work harder than Silicon Valley teams. While there is some truth to this, there is a lot more to the story than number of hours worked.
2/ My background: Lived and worked in Beijing for nearly 3 years in a senior role at Microsoft Research Asia. This 100% doesn't make me a China expert, but I have more expertise in this specific area than most Western startup folks.
3/ The first thing to understand about China is that it has a very large population, and people are a lot cheaper than they are in the US. Any Chinese team you're looking at will have the ability to throw *far* more people at problems than you reasonably can in Silicon Valley.
