Blaming “Google” or “Facebook” for journalism’s problems is a lot line blaming Craigslist: The fundamental problem is the Internet making some aspect of the traditional business model unviable; the company’s more messenger than cause.
If Craig Newmark had decided to sell yoga pants for a living, it would still be ludicrous to think classified ads & personals would stay bundled to newspapers, a phenomenon completely tied to the economics of newsprint & physical distribution.
You can point to specific things Facebook in particular did that probably made things worse. But the core problems are a function of the disappearance on economic & technical constraints on information consumption. Breaking up FB doesn’t bring those back.
