I should probably know better than to wade into Abortion Twitter, but… on what planet do people imagine a woman carries a viable, healthy fetus to term & then decides to abort on the delivery table? Does anyone seriously believe this is a scenario we have to worry about?
The only reason anyone terminates a pregnancy that late is that something has gone unexpectedly and grievously wrong—usually so badly wrong that the choice is between termination and a slower, more painful death for the neonate.
I’m profoundly uninterested in performative outrage from people so morally stunted they believe it’s obligatory under those circumstances to prolong the child’s suffering and make the parents watch.

This “what’s in his heart” stuff is the dumbest thing about how we talk about racism, and perversely centers the conversation around the inner lives of white folks rather than the experiences of the people on the receiving end. What’s in your heart just doesn’t matter that much.
It’s like a polluter protesting that deep down they always cared a lot about nature... great. Maybe so. But who cares? Stop putting shit in the water.
Obviously it matters in a close-up “can I still be personal friends with this individual” sense. But for every broader public purpose we talk about racism, all this excavation of the soul is just noise.

NYT identifies a real problem—online privacy is governed by nominal consent that is rarely informed—but, as usual with arguments of this form, leaps way too quickly from “the consent model is problematic” to “statutory baselines will be better.” nytimes.com/2019/02/02/opi…
Substituting statutory baselines for contract can work tolerably well when the problems with informed consent are matched by relatively straightforward & uniform consumer preferences. Almost nobody *wants* to buy an exploding toaster. But privacy’s not really like that.
For one, as the NYT accidentally illustrates, the information problem can cut both ways. Users may be horrified to learn Spotify has “access” to their Facebook messages… but less so once the nature & purpose of the access is explained. newsroom.fb.com/news/2018/12/f…

This is exactly the argument for Senate confirmation Hamilton makes in the Federalist Papers: that it deters a president from filling important offices with “insignificant” and “pliant” people who will act as “obsequious instruments of his pleasure.”

Given the trajectory of the past three years on social media this is hardly a surprising "revelation."

Last night I promised a thread about #abortion before Roe v Wade legalized it nationally. Until the mid-1800s, common law allowed abortion until "quickening", when fetal movement can be felt. Toxic abortion remedies & doctors competing w midwives led to… 1/
laws outlawing abortion except where pregnancy was likely to be fatal spreading across the country. Bottled abortion remedies could be and were fatal, and doctors, almost all white and male, didn't want midwives competing with them for pregnancy care. 2/
