OK let's talk a little bit about all the hats in the show KINGDOM on Netflix 🎩 As Percival Lowell said in <the Land of Morning Calm>(1885), Joseon was the "Nation of Hats". It may be easier for you guys to understand the kinds of hats in East Asia, by this words.
A. 건 (巾/Geon[Kŏn]) : These are very basic and primitive headgear made with just simple cloth, and people put on it indoors.
B. 립 (笠/Lip) : These are general hats in Joseon with broad-brimmed style. Koreans prefer to call them "갓(Gat)", Korean native word.
C. 모 (帽/Mo) : the basic form of Korean, "모자(帽子/Moja)" meaning "hat". We can use this word for all of headwear, but especially for hats covering the top of the head.
D. 관(冠/Gwan[Kwan]) : These are circular ornaments like crown or diadem.
Then let us take examples 🎩
1. 흑립 (黑笠/Heounglip[Hŭngnip]) : I think some of you interested in Historical K Drama know about it. This is very general headgear Joseon men used when they going out, meaning a black Lip(B), but as I say, Koreans just call it Gat. this is translucent hat made with horsehair.
2. 주립 (朱笠/Ju-Lip[Jurip]) : It means a red Lip(B). Joseon military officers put it on with uniforms. this is red colored and decorated with barley ears, or specially for high ranks, whiskers of tigers.
3. 전립 (氈笠/Jeonlip[Jŏnnip]) : This is a new model of no.2 type, in formal case, but flexible intermixed. This name means fur Lip(B). it is made with animal fur so more so seems a thick than others. the crown part is round shaped, and decorated with feather and a tassel.
4. 평정건 (平頂巾/Pyeongjeonggeon[Pyŏngjŏnggŏn]) : This is not popular than other Korean hats, but you can find this often in Historical K drama. This milk carton shaped headgear is put on by students and lower officers. the name means Geon(A) with flat crown part.
5. 정자관 (程子冠/Jeongjagwan[Jŏngjagwan]) : This is both A and D type. The name means just a 'Gwan(D) of 程子, Chinese scholar'. But Chinese and Korean style changed very differently. Korean's is mountain shaped, usually used by dignified noblemen.
6. 사모 (紗帽/Samo) : It means a silk Mo(C). The officers' uniform hat, with tiered crown and a pair of wing. Originally it was a Geon(A) type, the way to tie a knot at the back of the hat. after this changed to the hard hat, Samo, the knot became the wing shape.
7. Eunuchs' hat was actually the same shape no.6 Samo. But in Historical K drama you almost just find this Samo without the wing. This is just dramatic interpretation. if you were in Joseon era, it would be hard for you to distinguish eunuchs from normal officers.
