Friendly fact-check for reporters covering BP's acquiescence today to years of shareholder pressure on climate change...Credit where it's due, but details matter: BP's pledge to "align" its business with #ParisAgreement excludes ~88% of emissions associated with its products. 1/n 
2/n: That's because "the company will not be setting targets any time soon for 'scope 3 emissions' produced by customers using its products" (buried but at least noted in @guardian piece, ignored entirely in many outlets). theguardian.com/business/2019/…
3/n: The problem is, BP's scope 3 emissions dwarf its direct emissions by roughly 7-to-1. [bp.com/content/dam/bp…]
4/n: So when BP claims, as it already does, that "our strategy is consistent with the Paris goals", bear in mind it's only talking about ~12% of its emissions at most, and that it continues to invest 97% of its business on oil. [desmog.co.uk/2019/01/29/bp-…]
5/n: This breathless, credulous reporting every time a fossil fuel company even *pledges* incremental progress risks facilitating strategic greenwashing. The same thing happened with Exxon in Oct and Shell in Dec: [Exxon] ; [Shell] .
