This #SOTU did a far better job of putting together a coherent vision for the country than most, including Trump's previous turn at bat. Interesting strategy to position Trump as far closer to the heart, and political center, of American than his adversaries.
He threw a couple of sharp partisan elbows, but he was mostly positive and energetic - a gently commanding presence rather than a wonk with a shopping list. "Gently commanding" is the favorite style of leadership for the American people.
Trump did a very good job of illustrating that some of Washington's ugliest arguments are the artificial creations of a political elite that has grown very distant from the people. Beltway conventional wisdom melts quickly under the warm light of common sense.
"Great nations do not fight endless wars." We really shouldn't be fighting endless political squabbles, either. Our greatness is not expressed through government programs.
And on the policy front, Trump did a great job of reminding voters that Democrats were comprehensively wrong in all of their doomsday predictions. They HAD to sit on their hands while he rolled off the good news, because they said all of that good news was impossible.
