Canadian foreign affairs minister Chrystia Freeland, asked in Washington about her willingness to see NAFTA talks reopened to address the various Dem concerns, says, “Canada has done its part.” She adds, “The negotiation was very thorough.”
Negotiations on the original NAFTA, signed in 1992, were reopened in 1993 in response to Dem concerns. Canada didn’t like it but knew it had to be done. Freeland has no need to show flexibility now, though.
Freeland met with Senate Foreign Relations Committee chair Jim Risch today after the anti-ISIS gathering. She’s meeting with USTR Bob Lighthizer and Senate Finance Commitee chair Chuck Grassley tomorrow.
The head of the House Ways and Means trade subcommittee offers another signal from Democrats that the approval process on the new NAFTA might take a while:
