A spectre is haunting Britain - the spectre of a German-dominated EU. It haunts remainers and leavers, as @thatginamiller @LeadNotLeaveUK shows. It is, however, based on a myth. What we need is a better understanding of decision-making in the EU. This thread is Brexit-neutral.
@thatginamiller @LeadNotLeaveUK Let’s start with the obvious signs that there’s something more complex going on than German domination. Take language use. If the EU is dominated by Germany, surely it must use German more than other languages. But does it?
@thatginamiller @LeadNotLeaveUK No. While inofficially English, French and German are the Commission’s main working languages, it is English that dominates in Commission and Council. The Court speaks French. politico.eu/article/french…

Two UK trade deal-stories today that deserve our attention (thread)
The first one regards Japan. Japan doesn’t just want to “roll over” Japan-EU. It negotiates an FTA with the UK. And it’s bringing to bear the fact that the UK alone weighs less, economically, than the EU27.
The UK apparently (and not particularly diplomatically) points to the need to speed up the negotiations to reach agreement quickly.

Just to raise awareness on the danger of shooting ourselves in the foot: The UK is apparently in the process of leaving EUI. (Thread) eui.eu
EUI is the European University Institute, an institution of Higher education and learning. Full disclosure: I have spent some time there. But then... many people in academia have. It is well-known. I would say “elite”, but apparently that’s a bad word these days.

.@augstein glaubt auch, es gäbe falsche Fragen und führt als Beispiel "Darf ich Angela Merkel töten?" an. Das ist allerdings keine falsche Frage, sondern eine recht einfache Frage. Man darf nicht.

Die Argumentation von Augstein ist seltsam verschwurbelt.
Und natürlich ist auch die Frage erlaubt, warum private NGO glauben, nach der Rettung von sich freiwillig in Seenot begebenden Afrikaner diese nicht zurück zur nächsten Küste zu bringen, wie das Seerecht es vorschreibt, sondern nach Europa zu kutschieren.

IMO: we need MUCH TOUGHER laws on illegal-drug financing, manufacturing & whole-sale level distribution along with RICO enforcement. Retail level distribution & use consequences MUST BE DEFINITIVE and EQUITABLE in application across US.
