Valentines from the Odyssey. A possible classroom assignment: have students identify who says what, & discuss what kind of love each character feels towards the addressee. Does Odysseus ever deliver a Hallmark-usable line to Penelope? If not, why not?
Or, students write a paper arguing, “The only True Love in the Odyssey is that X for Y”. X and Y can be: Polyphemus/ the ram; Eurycleia/Odysseus; Eurymachus/Telemachus; Telemachus/Pisistratus; Penelope/her house. No married couples allowed, for the exercise.
I meant Eumaeus/ Telemachus, but an ingenious student could do either way. Eurymachus/melantho would work too. Many possibilities.

You can give just a few dollars, or just a few dollars a month. You can do it anonymously. I've had colleagues say the lack of means testing is a problem. But I've benefited from so many things that had nothing to do with means or worth (even beyond white privilege...).
I personally would certainly not be a classicist if, during my teens, my dad had not suddenly started earning more money from his writing, and switched me to a private school, where I learned Latin & Greek. I didn't have to work for it. I didn't even want it

I've been asked many times about my translation of the first epithet in the "Odyssey": polytropos (polytropon). I won't boringly repeat my thoughts on that. But I want to emphasize how very difficult, on some level impossible, all the epithets in Homer are.
How much repetition can a contemporary anglophone reader stand? What does repetition read like to us, vs sound like to an archaic audience? There's definitely a difference in what repetition conveys in different types of text & different cultural contexts. What then to do?
More specifically: the repeated elements in Homer have a dignity, the power of poetic folk memory. But it's often extremely difficult to translate them into English without making them sound just clunky or awkward or totally ridiculous.

One thing that transitioning has done for me is that it's allowed me to truly love and accept and BELIEVE IN myself. I used to be plagued with self-doubt and self-loathing and I really don't feel those things anymore. I actually LIKE who I am. It feels radical, revolutionary.
I know that I'm smart and creative. I know that I'm kind and that I have a good heart. I know that I'm capable of being loved. I never really believed any of that before. And like, WOW.
Don't get me wrong: I still have plenty of worries and anxieties and problems and stuff. I just feel like I can manage them. I feel like they can't own me, and their little voices in my head are a lot harder to believe.

#Women have much greater #hormonal fluctuations each month than #men do. Simply put, a woman's thought life and #emotions are more prone to high highs, and low lows. This isn't a "design flaw" but rather how #God made a #woman to be in touch with the needs of small #children.
Nothing is more short-sighted as a #man than viewing a #woman as an "overly emotional" or "flawed" version of a man's thought process or #emotions. A woman that does not let her emotions out will become very #passiveaggressive, #depressed or #angry. Your job is to be an #outlet.
