In a way, October 2018 has felt like October 19, 1987, but in super slow motion. Here's the headline from the following day. Explanations sound familiar: "analysts scrambled for explanations, which ranged from rising interest rates...to the possibility of war..."
It’s interesting what is still considered defensive. Low-growth businesses like Hershey, Nestle, Walmart and P&G are up in October.
Here's a comparison of P/E multiples (straight from Bloomberg) before and after the Black Monday crash in Oct 1987 (-20.5%) and this year's slow-mo crash (-21.0%). Back then, interest rates were sky high and P/E implied strong growth; today it's the opposite, with fear baked in

The lesson I want to get out of this book is how you can hire the smartest people to run a country but still end up with horrible foreign and local policy because they lacked wisdom. (or understanding of how reality fights the abstract. It becomes messy, detailed & poor to map)
The establishment - its what Trump lacked and still affect the efficiency of how his government is run. The running of government requires the knowledge of so many people for so many positions. You can't "drain the swamp".
With real party men like Obama and Bush. By the time you have won the election you have a list of people for every position that you have deicide on. Usually the list may be supplied by a think tank or a party person.

Learning about surface vs deep learners. @lsu Teaching Colloquium. Thinking about implications and applications of learned information.
Learner needs to regard info as important, intriguing, or beautiful. Then deep learning occurs. Learner needs to be in charge of the question. But, few students will not take a deep approach to learning.

Hollywood actor
Division I woman’s hoop coach
Legendary sports agent
Turnaround specialist
Harvard Law professor
Quad amputee

Here are some takeaways:
1) A leader can learn so much about the current health and mindset of a team / organization by walking around, checking in and asking how everyone is doing.
2) Preparation is drilling over and over and over so you can be present when you have to perform. Having a prepared mind dramatically increases trust and results. SEALs train for more than three years before being deployed.

1/ The bad news: #ICOs are dead. The good news: their rebirth is just around the corner. Safer, cheaper, legal. Most importantly: healthier.
2/ Let’s start with the death notice, especially since it seems like ICOs are at all time highs in every imaginable measure.
3/ In a newsletter (that I didn’t sign up for), it was claimed that past week alone more than 400 ICO projects were launched. That’s crazy!
