I love the thought that because the books is being read by so many educators, it’s being highlighted and annotated all over the place. They know how to really make use of a book.
I once brought in ex. scans of my highlighted and annotated books to show students what I meant when I talked about "digesting" a reading and they couldn't believe someone would treat books that way. I told them I couldn't believe they'd never been encouraged to do it themselves.
Students really had absorbed a fear of writing in their books, often because they knew the books were going to be handed down and they'd been cautioned not to. It's a reason why I'm a big believer in investing in making sure students have sufficient access to their own books.
And of course, in college, students are literally renting their books, or thinking about how they can maximize the resale because textbooks are so expensive. Consider the cost to learning when students aren't allowed to utilize books to their greatest potential.
Here's a study someone could do, grade performance and self-reported learning comparing those who are allowed to write in their books v. those who aren't. Hypothesis: Being able to mark-up and annotate your books results in improved learning and grade performance.
