Next time someone tries to brush aside the issues that affect women’s lives as “social issues” or “identity politics,” remember that nearly 2/3 of minimum wage earners in America are women, disproportionately women of color.
The U.S. is the only country in the developed world with no nationally mandated paid family leave. And for a woman earning minimum wage in America, full-time childcare costs an average of 2/3 of her income. This is a crisis.
We’ve been talking about equal pay for decades, but women on average still earn just 80 cents for every dollar a man earns. For Black women, it’s 61 cents. For Latinas, it’s 53. If we keep going at the current rate it will take *202 years* to close the global gender pay gap.
