Hiring a political operative with no journalism experience as a commentator, as a host, as a reporter, and as an editor overseeing reporters are all different things that generally lead to different responses.
The first three are at least somewhat common. The last, as far as I know, is not. If it is as well, people should provide examples of it, rather than examples of the first three.
The boring take is the accurate one: Particular people will criticize particular hires to particular positions based on particular circumstances.
