So the new foldable phones have “seen” Apple’s price increases and “raised” them quite a bit. Having literally just contradicted my earlier statements & bought an iPhone XS Max on AT&T Friday, here’s the “real” context on market pricing & what it means when these phones ship.
Huawei just took Apple’s spot at the most expensive spot in the market, with a legit device that can be both a phone and a tablet, without looking like you’re holding an iPad to your face. That is significant, because Apple devices are grossly-overpowered for “smartphones”.
Most people don’t really *need* this processing power in their pocket on a daily basis. Your Facebook/Twitter/Insta feeds are not that intense.

As these devices are getting PC powerful, the form factor is now the limiting factor.

So how does pricing come into play?
People buy > $1000 PCs all the time. But those purchases are not as easy to finance as phones.

Going from an iPhone 8 Plus to an XS Max cost me $83 in sales tax now + $13 extra/month vs what I was already paying. NBD.

Buying a decked-out Surface Pro 2 is a much deeper decision.
But I literally just lamented at how this phone feels like to should be doing more than it does, and how Lumia 950s had more PC-like capabilities than this does.

So the question is not “Who is going to pay $2600 for a phone?”

The question is “Would you pay $105/month over 24 months for a device flexible enough to handle all of your computing?”

Apple showed that it can happen. But they’re going to be jealous AF at those margins now.
I would fully expect that Apple is going to come out with one within the next two cycles. Might even delay this cycle 6 months so their next release can have a foldable option. We’ll have to see. But Apple no longer has the most luxurious phone on the market. That’s gonna hurt.
But it just goes to show you that Microsoft was once again WAY ahead of its time with what it was doing in phones (Continuum).

Also shows the game in miniature personal computers is FAR from over. /fin
