We'll be livetweeting the Apple Event here too, so follow along with us!
And... it looks like we got played on this one bit.ly/2D0O4uT
So the opening video is of a woman rushing a suitcase across the campus. We've got some sweet spy shit happening here:
It was... the clicker for the event.
*points to Tim's shoes* WHAT ARE THOOOOOOSE
“iOS is the most personal” operating system, and Tim says Apple is about to ship its 2 billionth iOS device.
Also looks like Tim's shoes are Nikes, which is a nice ad for Nike.
We're getting started with the Apple Watch. It's the #1 watch in the world—period.
Two products suggest there will just be iPhones and Watches today--no iPad. Also, this guy named Jeff. Hello, Jeff.
“Health is at the core of Apple Watch as well... Apple Watch has become an intelligent guardian for your health." But can it stop us from eating wings? No, never.
A commercial is now showing off the series 4. Lots of, uh, light and explosion looking stuff.
“Everything about it has been redesigned and reengineered.”
It'll be 35 to 32% larger and come in a 40mm and 44mm.
Here's the Apple Watch Series 4:
More faces, more options.
It's also thinner than we'd thought it'd be
The speaker is reportedly 50% louder, and the back is made of black ceramic and Sapphire crystal. Reception has supposedly also improved.
You can see the redesigned Digital Crown also comes with a new button-free button. All is based on haptic feedback, it seems.
Here's the back, which, yeah! It looks nice.
oh my god apple watch is life alert
"YOU'VE FALLEN AND YOU CANT GET UP" -- your new apple watch, probably
More seriously, the watch can detect your fall and then offer to contact emergency services, and if it detects your immobile for one minute it will contact emergency services and your emergency contact. Which is...actually really nice.
More health guardian features: The Watch can now detect when your heart rate is too low, and detect an irregular rhythm.
The heart rate monitor looks meaningfully different. AND the Apple Watch has an electrocardiogram built in!
A closer look at the Watch's heart rate measuring tools:
Here's our longer take on the Series 4 Watch bit.ly/2CPWW6f
Confirmed FDA approval for the Apple Watch Series 4.
Apple says this is the first FDA clearance of its kind for the heart monitoring and ECG functions.
“People in general don’t like things that are medical.” Says the Apple guy making the medical devices. But this does looks neat.
Apple now talking about privacy for the watch, and says that you, the user, will decide who sees all this new information. It says it is encrypted on the device, then adds “and in the cloud.”
Here are the highlights of the Apple Watch Series 4.
Now Apple claims the Apple Series 4 will have 18 hours of battery live, and six hours for GPS fitness tracking—in case you jog for six hours straight. In practice, we'll see what this ends up being.
re: The FDA clearance—there's a difference between clearance and approval. Keep that in mind.
There it is, folks!
The Series 4 with GPS will be $400, with cellular it will be $500, and the Series 3 got a price drop to $280.
You can order Series 4 Friday, and it will be available NEXT Friday (September 21) in stores.
Apple Watch will enable you to do the hokey pokey apparently.
Have you ever done the hokey pokey with an Apple Watch? Let us know.
"I have done karate with the Apple Watch." -- @adamclarkestes
@adamclarkestes Time to talk about the iPhone X!
The new iPhone is pronounced iPhone "10 S"
It will be available in gold, silver, and space gray (aka black)
"Most durable glass ever in a smartphone?" We'll be the judge of that.
same
The 6.5 inch iPhone, after weeks of leaks, is officially called the Xs Max.
It has a “Super Retina” display with a higher resolution than any previous iPhone. 458ppi, with HDR (Dolby Vision and HDR10) and 120Hz refresh rate, as well as a wide color gamut.
Apple says the phone is faster due to faster algorithms, and claims the Xs and Xs max have the most secure facial authentication ever in a phone.
The processor for the phone will be an A12 Bionic, and it's on a 7nm process. The 7nm process has been available for a while, but this is easily the biggest product yet released with a 7nm chip.
More processor stats:
a pretty nice stat
All this bragging would be more impressive if iPhones weren’t built for a specific operating system and things weren’t already fast. This leaves us wondering if devs will design for the speed of A12 and leave older iPhones feeling supremely sluggish.
You can have up to 512GB of storage on the iPhone Xs and Xs Max.
So this is what makes the camera a little extra special? That's fine, I guess. Okay.
Is this... a dev conference? Why are we talking so much about CoreML...
Wait are we getting Skyrim on the iPhone? (Please don't let it be Skyrim)
PHEW it's a new Elder Scrolls game called BLADES
If you wanted to see some A12 Bionic stats:
Blades is available on iPhones later this fall. And the dorky demo is now OVER.
Nash is showing off an app called Home Court that tracks metrics for your basketball practice.
Is this lazy basketball coaching? Someone at Deadspin wanna tell us? Cool computer chip though.
Oh, are we playing AR GALAGA NOW?
pew pew
... can we be done bragging about A12 now please?
So far all that Phil has really said is "the pictures will be better."
The camera got some new sensors and stuff! Both back and front come with new tricks.
The iPhone Xs will have “smart HDR”. The camera should be able to take multiple images with one click to craft even better HDR images. Which means more details in errors of extreme brightness and shadows.
Apple is really wading deep into the weeds here.
These photos are good, but it would be great if they explained any of this well.
"bokeh"
*holds earpiece* I'm being told that bokeh means blur, which is something you can now adjust in portrait mode shots by adjusting depth of field.
Just a note: Adjustable depth of field has been possible in post for some time, and Lytro first introduced the feature with its since failed camera.
(This really feels like a classic "s" series iPhone Day, huh?)
Yeah, we've all seen Stranger Things.
The iPhone Xs should last 30 minutes longer than the X, and the Xs Max will last up to an hour and a half more than the X.
The iPhone Xs and Xs Max will support Dual SIMs which means you can have two numbers on one phone. This will be called DSDS (Dual SIM Dual Standby).
Dual SIM support will be provided using eSIMS, which is only supported by a few carriers (Sprint is not among them). In China, where eSIMS are not allowed there will be a special Xs Max with dual SIM card slots.
Behind the scenes note: The camera geeks at Gizmodo are still chattering about that depth of field stuff.
“These are incredible new iPhones.” - Phil

... is it iPhone Xr time?
Meet the iPhone Xr. Pronounced the "iPhone 10 R," it's all aluminum, while the Xs is steel.
It comes in red, blue, white, black, yellow, and coral.
Apple is calling it the “Liquid Retina display.” 6.1 inches. It’s a bigger display than the 8 Plus, but smaller body.
1792 x 828 resolution with 326ppi., 120Hz refresh rate, and no wider color gamut or HDR.
A message from our EIC: “Colorful phones are for teens but even teens are too cool for them”.
More specs on the iPhone Xr display:
The Xr will have the same A12 Bionic CPU, with a 12MP wide angle camera on the back. While it only has one camera on the back, it WILL have portrait mode.
It should have an hour and a half more battery life than the 8 Plus.
HOW many charts are we gonna get today before we see a price on anything? Some more iPhone Xr stats while we wait:
So... if the iPhone Xr takes Portrait Mode photos with only one camera, what’s the point of the second camera on the phones that cost hundreds of dollars more?
iPhone Xr will start at $750.
Pre-orders start October 19 and ship October 26
iPhone Xs starts at $1,000 and the iPhone Xs Max starts at $1,100
You can pre-order the Xs and Xs Max Friday and will start shipping next Friday.
The iPhone 7 and 8 will both continue to be available. The 7 will now start at $449, the 8 at $599.
Here's all the pricing info we got:
iOS 12 will be available Sept 17 and macOS Mojave September 24.
With the HomePod thing, it’s almost as if Apple realizes it has underdelivered today.

"What a great morning!"
Honestly it kind of makes sense that the iPad redesign wasn't announced. Can you IMAGINE how long this event would be if they also had to go into that?
So we've got three new things, basically. The Apple Watch Series 4, the iPhone Xs, and the iPhone Xr.

Here's everything the Apple Watch Series 4 can do: bit.ly/2CPWW6f
Thanks so much for following along with our livetweets! @alexhcranz is heading to the demo room and we'll get you her hands-on ASAP. Stay tuned.
