Thread on how to develop a panel proposal.

Identify potential panelists, discussants, & chair.

Panelists? Controversial topics in your area of research? Who's generating best evidence on various sides? With what 2-3 other scholars would you like to share some time?
Discussants? Ask yourself & other panelists, whose perspectives do we want to hear? The discussants are doing panelists a favor, giving their time & feedback. Approach in that spirit. Are they likely to be at conference?

Chair? Largely ceremonial but also maybe asks questions.
Here's a typical kind of email I might use to recruit fellow panelists.

Anybody else have advice? Let's try to demystify this process & break down barriers to entry.
Organizing a panel is a great excuse to gather your friends, reach out to your heroes, & learn from those with whom you disagree.

Best panels have: clear theme, great research, diversity in intellectual view points, demographics, career maturities, & air impt debates.
We just ask for abstracts, not full papers.

Also, we are open to:

- including policy proposals alongside relevant research. Not everything has to be headed to an academic journal,

- including multiple social science disciplines focusing on a labor topic.
