Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland is taking reporter questions in Montreal. She re-confirms her commitment to supporting Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister.
Freeland says NAFTA was the most difficult issue she's dealt with, and what was important, was working as a team. Says she's always had support of her colleagues and her Prime Minister. Says it is important for a government to have that to succeed. Says you have to work as a team
Freeland says as Canadians will remember, there were rough moments in NAFTA. Says at all times she felt the complete support of cabinet, caucus, and the Prime Minister. Says Canada succeeds when Canadian play as a team.
Freeland is asked whether she thinks Trudeau has a problem working with women? Freeland says she works in close cooperation with the PM, and is absolutely convinced the PM is a feminist, and is a good boss for women.
Freeland says she's very proud of the feminist agenda of her government.
Freeland is asked about China blocking canola from Richardson (one of Canada's largest canola exporters). Freeland says she takes this issue personally, as the daughter of a canola farmer. Says government is "working very hard" with the Chinese government on this issue
Freeland says there's no science to back up the actions by the Chinese on this canola issue (which is reminiscent of the Canadian government calling the arrests of two Canadians by Chinese authorities arbitrary).
Freeland is asked about whether losing two female cabinet ministers hurts the PM's claim he's a feminist. Freeland says she is very sad Jane Philpott has chosen to leave cabinet. Says the feminist agenda of the government is one of the things she's most proud.
