Two-thirds of Americans believe the President of the United States committed crimes before taking office.

Nearly half believe he committed crimes in office.

These numbers make a damning Mueller report unsurvivable.
At minimum, they make it untenable to protect a president from indictment.

What matters isn’t just the growing conviction that the President is a criminal.

What matters is the direction and momentum.

These numbers will get far worse.

And that will break the dam.
Americans are the masters of holding opposing thoughts and shifting their overall opinion based on merely re-weighting which of those opposing thoughts they care more about.

Take marriage equality for example...
During the period when the marriage equality fight was reaching its peak, American opinions on gay marriage itself changed very little.

People who believed it was “wrong” largely continued to believe that.

What shifted was their emphasis.
A subset of that population shifted to caring more about “government staying out of people’s personal lives”.

While a bit afield, that tension between opposing thoughts is a reasonable proxy for the opposing thoughts some have about Trump.
A growing percentage of people who actually support Trump have the conflicting thought that he has committed crimes before and during his term.

A small shift in weighting gives momentum to impeaching and/or indicting him.
It is entirely possible we may soon arrive at a place where there is the seemingly contradictory public opinions of:

40% Trump approval

70% support for a trial of some kind - whether that’s impeachment or criminal
Bottom-line, don’t over-weight Trump’s approval numbers.

His “fundamentals” are eroding badly. The public’s view of his honesty, ethics, trustworthiness and lawfulness are all hemorrhaging.

A small shift toward weighting those things more heavily can change everything.
We may find ourselves two months from now with their being widespread support for a trial of fact *even though* Trump’s approval rating hasn’t meaningfully changed at all.

Not out of reason and wouldn’t surprise me one bit. Us Americans are predictably contradictory like that.
