Fox News has absolutely served to escalate debate for profit, but I think what FNC and its people never counted on was that there would be a president who believed them completely and then formed a total feedback loop that escalated the propaganda daily.
Time and time again people talk about Trump's manipulations, but the honest to god truth is that Trump believes what he sees on Fox. He doesn't possess the ability to discern propaganda from truth, at all. Because of this, he literally reflects Fox News back to the TV.
Fox News, in keeping up with Trump, has had to turn the temperature up in order to capitalize off his base, which they helped create. As a result, every single day the situation gets worse, the fever grows hotter. They're completely bound to Trump and Trump to them.
Both parties are prospering from the symbiosis, but it's tearing the country apart and has completely rotted the GOP from the inside out. There's probably no possibility for them to be separated at this point, and I've talked to Fox News employees who are scared as hell.
Fox was always intended as an information and propaganda organ for conservative mindset. It's done its job as intended perfectly. But at this point, the twisting of reality, has become so awful and everpresent it's essentially shattered reality. Trump is the embodiment of that.
But now we have a president who watches the propaganda and believes it's real news. Trump has said, multiple times, he thinks Fox is "fair but tough." That's just a whole new level of ignorance that's beyond frightening. This is through the looking glass stuff here.
