As somebody who covered the Trump Campaign in 2016, who watched gangs of Trump supporters terrorize people and intimidate them with threats and signs of bigotry, it’s no surprise at all there were significant spikes in hate crimes.

The Trump Campaign was a traveling circus of hate and racial animus that enabled people to focus their anger and release their worst selves, the bigotry normally only reserved for private spaces. Each rally was a powder keg.
What Trump has done is to take people with racists views and link them to an open community and a political identity that gives them rhetorical cover while energizing their prejudices. This is a recipe for racial violence and intimidation.
